Grand Haven Community Mourns Teacher Amanda “Mandy” Karolkiewicz, Husband and Six Children After Tragic House Fire
GRAND HAVEN TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A Michigan community is mourning the deaths of a beloved elementary school teacher, her husband, and their six children after eight family members were found dead inside a home following a fire Friday morning.
The victims have been identified as 39-year-old Amanda “Mandy” Karolkiewicz, her 41-year-old husband Kristopher Michael Karolkiewicz, and their six children, who ranged in age from approximately 5 to 15 years old.
Amanda Karolkiewicz was a well-known and deeply loved educator at Peach Plains Elementary School, where she worked as a premier substitute teacher. She also previously served as a third-grade teacher at Sugar Mill Elementary School.
The tragedy has left colleagues, students, parents, and the wider Grand Haven community devastated.
Beloved Teacher Remembered for Compassion and Kindness
Those who worked with Amanda described her as a dedicated educator who brought patience, empathy, and warmth into the classroom.
A statement from Grand Haven Area Public Schools remembered Mandy as someone who cared deeply for students, especially those struggling through difficult moments.
“Mandy loved her students, especially when they’re having a hard day, responding with empathy, patience, and care,” the district said. “She poured her heart into her work, was always willing to help wherever needed, and helped make Peach Plains a better place to learn and work.”
Colleagues said her commitment extended beyond teaching lessons. She was known for creating a supportive environment where students felt valued, understood, and encouraged. 
The school district said the loss of Mandy will be deeply felt throughout the school community.
Eight Family Members Found After House Fire
The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office said firefighters were first called to the area of Riverside Trail near 148th Avenue and Mercury Drive in Grand Haven Township around 8:30 a.m. Friday after reports of a smoke smell.
Emergency crews searched the area but were unable to locate a fire at that time and left.
Later, shortly after 11:40 a.m., dispatchers received additional calls reporting smoke coming from a home on Riverside Trail. Callers described a residence filled with smoke, with white smoke visible from a window. 
Firefighters returned to the scene and began an aggressive interior response. Crews entered the home to extinguish the fire and search for possible occupants.
Inside the residence, firefighters discovered multiple deceased individuals.
Investigation Into Possible Murder-Suicide
The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that some of the victims had suffered gunshot wounds. Investigators said they are examining the possibility of a murder-suicide, though officials initially cautioned that the investigation was still ongoing.
Sheriff’s Office Capt. Jacob Sparks said the case was complex and required a thorough investigation before officials could confirm exactly what happened. 
“It’s too early for me to say that it’s a murder-suicide,” Sparks said. “I can tell you that that’s one theory that we have and we’re still looking to see if we can verify that.”
Investigators have not released all details regarding the circumstances of the deaths, including specific information about the firearm evidence involved.
Authorities later indicated that the entire family who lived in the home was believed to have been involved and that there was no ongoing threat to the public.
“We believe that everybody who was involved in the situation is in the residence,” Sparks said.
Fire Investigation Continues
The cause and origin of the fire remain under investigation.
The Michigan State Police arson investigation team is assisting local authorities in determining whether the fire was intentionally set.
Officials said the home sustained significant smoke damage, which complicated the initial investigation. However, firefighters were praised for their quick response, allowing detectives to begin processing the scene.
At least two dogs were also found deceased inside the home.
Community Responds to Unimaginable Loss
Victim services teams assisted in notifying relatives of the deaths, while support personnel provided assistance to investigators working through the lengthy and emotional scene.
Capt. Sparks described the tragedy as one that could affect any community.
“Bad stuff can happen in any community. I think sometimes there’s some stereotyping that goes on. Bad stuff can happen in any community,” he said. “This is a tragic event. No matter how you slice it, it’s a tragic event.”
As investigators continue working to understand what happened, friends, neighbors, and school communities are coming together to remember Amanda, Kristopher, and their children.
For many at Grand Haven Area Public Schools, the loss of Mandy represents the loss of a teacher who dedicated her life to helping children learn, grow, and feel supported.
The investigation remains active, and officials said additional information will be released as it becomes available.
